LAME IDEALS / HROMI IDEALI
Text: Milutin Uskoković
Director: Zlatko Sviben

The reason why the National Theatre in Užice stages this play by Milutin Uskoković exceeds the need of a local community to pride itself on a hometown author. We indeed need new reading of Uskoković’s opus because a whole century later we as a society have not moved forward, but stayed put where Uskoković had left us; all this as if there hasn’t been any progress in the past hundred years or as if progress as such was a completely relative category. Uskoković focuses his interest on Serbian intellectuals who are generally lost, ill-willed and always in bad mood. They dream of leaving this place and of change, but they accept compromises. They are utterly unable to comprehend the limits of their own power, so their energy is wasted on laments over their and national disaster in general. Based on this, almost forgotten piece, Užice NT led by Zlatko Sviben has created a performance that surpasses all their previous limits and by which they present themselves in a totally new light. Lame ideals is a strong, stylish performance of Baroque visual expression, and it reveals the singing and acting potentials of this ensemble. Incredible, almost rude eclecticism by director Zlatko Sviben has happily reunited with ambitions of this theater and created, I dare say, the most ambitious theatrical achievement in Serbia proper in this season - a benchmark of what in both artistic and craftmanship terms might be achieved if we are ready to go beyond our own limits.
