Obama announces new steps to curb gun violence

Obama announced new steps Friday to help curb gun violence, including identifying the requirements that “smart guns” would have to meet for law enforcement agencies to buy and use them.
Smart guns use technologies to prevent an accidental shooting or help track down a missing gun.
The Justice and Homeland Security department said they expect to complete the work of smart-gun requirements by October.
The president also called for sharing mental health records with the federal background check system.
The Social Security Administration will publish a proposed rule to ensure mental health records of people who are prohibited from buying a gun are reported.
The White House will hold a conference in May on preventing gun violence.
