'Trillions' of cicada bugs set to emerge from underground in northeastern U.S.

"Trillions" of cicadas are set to emerge this May in several northeastern U.S. states after living underground for 17 years.

"There will be trillions," Ohio State University professor Dave Sheltar told CNN affiliate WBNS-10TV.

On appearance they live for up to four weeks and spend most of that time mating, reported CNN. While mating, the male clicks its abdomen and makes an acoustic sound to attract a female.

The females respond by snapping their wings. After this, the female cicada lays hundreds of tiny eggs on tree limb, reported CNN.

When these eggs hatch, the cicada nymphs fall from the tree and burrow into the ground. Here, they'll look for tree roots to feed on and then stay underground for up to 17 years until they emerge as adults in 2033, CNN reported.
