Ultra thin electronic skin turns your body into an LED display

TOKYO — A new body of work by a group of Japanese engineers could have us staring at the backs of our hands instead of our phones.

A research group from the University of Tokyo has developed an electronic skin that can be worn like a temporary tattoo.

The group published their study in the journal Science Advances. In it, they describe the e-skin, which is composed of several layers of organic and inorganic material. At only 3 micrometers thick, it's thinner than even some spider silks, reports the Washington Post. It's also flexible and can withstand crumpling and distortion.

A protective layer keeps out oxygen and water vapor, enabling the prototype to function for several days.

According to Science Advances, the device can work as a pulse oximeter, measuring blood oxygen levels via polymer light-emitting diodes (PLED) that are laminated onto the finger. The diodes use green and red lights, along with a photodetector, as a sensor, with the results then appearing on the larger display.

The team is working on ways to further the technology, which in the future can be used to monitor people's health.

Though with advancements like this that combine technology and biology, it can be used for more than just health and medicine. Someday soon, we might all be wearing our smart devices like second skin.
