Le premier long baiser au théâtre fut montré à New-York à la fin de la pièce ''La veuve Jones'' et fit un scandale. Une actrice canadienne, May Irwin, devint ensuite millionaire, adorée du public, figurant dans plusieurs films suite à ce début au cinéma. Cette scène de 21 secondes fut répétée 3 fois pour faire ce court film. C'est à la demande d'un journal new-yorkais que Edison accepta de filmer ce long baiser si controversé. Lorsqu'on présenta ce film, ce fut un scandale auprès du clergé et certains critiques de journaux. Mais ce fut le film le plus populaire de 1896.
