Sunbathing woman run over by police pickup truck, dragged under the car

GRAND ISLE, LOUISIANA — It’s the kind of accident that just shouldn’t happen: Louisiana woman Lindsey Gordon, 23, was run over as she lounged on a Grand Isle beach by a police pickup truck that was being driven by the area’s assistant police chief.

As Gordon enjoyed soaking up the sun with a friend on Thursday, she was dragged under the truck, resulting in a shattered pelvis and internal bleeding that required multiple surgeries.

Lindsey Gordon’s unidentified friend managed to jump out of the way and screamed until Assistant Grand Isle Police Chief Norris Esponge Jr. stopped the vehicle.

Gordon’s mother told a TV station she couldn’t understand how the driver didn’t see Lindsey, her friend or the cooler they brought with them, but a quick online search shows getting run over while sunbathing on the beach is tragically common.

It happened in 2010 on a New York beach, in 2011 on Daytona Beach in Florida, in 2013 in both Australia and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and on Venice Beach in California in 2013.

— And those are just first page search results.

Assistant Police Chief Esponge says he circled the beach and saw no one. He was not found to be drunk or otherwise impaired … could these trucks just be too tall for beach patrols?

Are these drivers just spacing out? Or should beach patrols should be done on ATVs or something a bit closer to the ground?
