CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS — A 70-year-old man armed with shotgun took his own life after his attempt to shoot his ex-supervisor to death was thwarted by the victim's briefcase.

Charles Obeid, 58, told CBS Boston that he raised his briefcase when he heard gunfire while entering his Cambridge, Massachusetts office Thursday morning.

The shooter was an ex-employee of his, Kermit Hooks. The 70-year-old had began firing at Obeid in a rage, but Obeid's briefcase saved his life. The two had worked together at the Senior Whole Health until Obeid fired Hooks a few months ago.

After his attempt on his former boss's life failed, the 70-year-old shooter returned to the his car and took his own life, the Boston Globe reported.

Obeid survived the attack and sustained only minor injuries to his face due to shrapnel from the gunfire, CBS Boston reported.
