Panama's history is unique, because it records two independence days both celebrated in the month of November. One is its independence from Colombia in 1903; and the other is its independence from Spain in 1821. I was lucky enough to be in Panama for one such parade in Boquete, which was phenominal. It started at about 9:00 a.m and went on until late afternoon. I saw everything from marching bands to twirling batons, floats, flags, women and children dressed in folklore attire, such as the Pollera (which is the country's national attire for women) and Native American and Afro-Caribbean costumes. Although we celebrate the 4th of July in America, I have not seen anything like this. If you are lucky enough to be in Panama in November, be sure to make plans to participate in this extravaganza!
