Video: Can love finally beat the caste system in Senegal?
In Senegal, genealogy is not to be taken lightly. A rigid social hierarchy sometimes thwarts blossoming romances. We bring you a 26-minute documentary on these "forbidden" loves.
In Senegal, it is difficult for a Keita or a Coulibaly, both from "noble" families, to marry a Seck, from the blacksmith caste, or an Ndour, from the caste of griots, musicians and storytellers who are considered commoners. Couples need a lot of courage and perseverance in order to see their love triumph and earn acceptance from their families.
We met a young couple composed of Khady, a griot, and Massamba, a nobleman, whose family rejects the relationship in the name of tradition.
