N-word t-shirts spell big trouble for Arizona high school seniors

PHOENIX — Six Phoenix high school students landed in hot water after a photo of them wearing T-shirts spelling out a racial slur went viral.
Seniors at Desert Vista High School wore shirts that spelled out: "Best you've ever seen class of 2016" as they posed for a panoramic yearbook photo on Friday, the Arizona Republic reported.
After the photo was taken, six girls had the brilliant idea to play Scrabble with the letters on their shirt, and chose to spell out the N-word, an anti-black racial slur.
The offensive photo went viral on social media and was received with shock and outrage by students, parents, and members of the community.
The six students received disciplinary action after school authorities got wind of the racist image, allegedly in the form of a 5-day suspension, according to the Root.
A school spokesperson and its black student union emphasized that the photo did not reflect the beliefs of the entire student body.
But outraged netizens, unsatisfied with the discipline meted out, started a petition on Change.org, calling for the girls to be expelled and the principal fired. So far, the petition has more than 35,000 signatures.
