TIMERGARA: Malakand grand jirga comprised of elected public representatives including MNAs, MPAs, senators and district nazims on Sunday demanded of the federal government to pass the China Pakistan Economic Corridor from the area and start work on the Malakand express way for improvement of tourism and trade. The demand was made during an all parties conference held at the Fishing Hut Chakdara with Jamaat-i-Islami chief Siraj ul Haq in the chair. It was the ever first event in the political history of Malakand division that all political parties and elected public representatives united on a single platform for resolution to collective problems being faced by people of the region.

Sitting senators, MNAs, MPAs, district and tehsil nazims besides heads of political parties attended the conference. The JI chief Siraj ul Haq, senators Nisar Muhammad, Ahmad Hassan, MNAs Junaid Akbar of PTI, Dr Ibadullah of PML-N, Sahibzada Tariq ullah ans Sahibzada Yaqub Khan of JI, Shehzada Iftikharud Din of Chitral, woman MNA Ayesha Syed, JUI-F provincial chief Maulana Gul Naseeb Khan, QWP senior vice chairman and MPA Bakht Baidar Khan, Syed Jaffar Shah of ANP, Haidar Ali of PTI, Junaid Akbar of PTI, Swat, Shangla, Bunir, Chitral, Lower Dir and Upper Dir district nazims spoke on the occasion. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa senior minister Inayatullah Khan, finance minister Muzafar syed, habib ur Rehman, and parliamentary secretaries were also present on the occasion.

In a joint declaration at the end, the JI chief Siraj ul Haq announced that a 25 member committee comprised of elected senators, MNAs, MPAs and district nazims from all seven districts of Malakand division would soon meet the Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Nawaz Sharief and chief minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pervez Khattak to apprise them of genuine problems being faced by people of the region. He said the committee members would again meet in February to check progress on the joint agenda presented by the grand jirga on Sunday.

The JI chief said that another 9 member-committee comprised of sitting ministers and MPAs from Malakand division would raise the issue of all affected people of Malakand due to militancy, displacement, flash floods and earthquake.

The joint declaration said that Dir, Swat and Chitral were merged in Pakistan in 1969 and since then the region had been neglected by successive governments. The jirga said that the CPEC was the second biggest project after atomic explosion in 1998 and it would change condition in the country. “This jirga comprised of all elected representatives from all parties and all districts of Malakand demands of the Prime Minister to pass the CPEC from this region,” Siraj ul Haq said, adding he was hopeful the prime minister would honour demand of the jirga. The conference observed that deforestation in all districts of Malakand was being made because the residents had no other means of firewood. It demanded of the federal government to supply natural gas to all districts of Malakand beyond discrimination. The conference maintained that suitable roads played vital role in development but unfortunately roads in all areas of Malakand had been damaged due to militancy and military operations. The participants demanded of the government to reconstruct the main roads and start work on Malakand express way. It said the region was in rich in natural resources like forests, rivers, minerals and human resources but the last six years inappropriate situation in the region inflict 30 billion rupees losses to these resource. The conference in its joint declaration demanded of the Mian Nawaz Sharief to announce at least Rs 30 billion special package for people of Malakand division. It also demanded to exempt residents of Malakand from all kinds of taxes at least for the next ten years.
