CHICAGO — Two people were shot dead by Chicago police, one by mistake, during a domestic disturbance call on Saturday.

The shooting took place after Chicago police officers responded to a domestic incident in the 4700 block of West Erie Street early Saturday about 19-year-old Quintonio LeGrier threatening his father with a baseball bat, CBS Chicago reported.

Bettie Jones, 55, a downstairs neighbor was asked to open the door for the police but was apparently accidentally shot through the door by the police, Reuters reported. LeGrier was shot seven times by the police. Both victims were pronounced dead at two different hospitals later.

"Officers were confronted by a combative subject resulting in the discharging of the officer's weapon which fatally wounded two individuals," the Chicago police department said in a statement quoted by Reuters, confirming that Jones was "accidentally struck and tragically killed".

The shooting is currently being investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority.
