Teen sucked into wood chipper on fatal first (and last) day on the job

GASTONIA, NORTH CAROLINA — A recent high school graduate met a nightmarish end over the weekend, as he was pulled into a wood chipper during his first day on the job.

Mason Cox took had been searching for jobs and had recently secured work at a tree removal service. On his first day, he filled in for a colleague to earn some extra cash. His co-workers on site who were elsewhere working on other trees say they think Cox must have been trying to jam the trees into the woodchipper by kicking them through, and his clothes must have gotten caught on something. Police found Cox's body inside the machine, shortly before 1 p.m.

Cox's family is devastated by the loss. His mother, Debra Sisk, told WBTV, "I just started screaming when I found out how he died. It's bad enough that he's gone."

Police have ruled the death an accident and do not suspect foul play. The company, Crawford Tree Service, has closed temporarily as the North Carolina Department of Labor investigates the incident.

Mason Cox was only 19.
