Poland Continues to Oppose U.K. Proposal on Welfare Reform

Poland's new prime minister, Beata Szydlo, said she continued to oppose a proposal by British Prime Minister David Cameron to restrict welfare benefits for people from other European Union countries, but indicated a willingness to try to find a solution.
Mr. Cameron was in Poland Thursday as part of a tour of Eastern Europe to lobby leaders ahead of a key EU meeting in Brussels next week, where he plans to discuss concessions he is seeking.
Mr. Cameron has promised the British public he will secure changes in the U.K.'s relationship with Brussels and then hold a referendum by the end of 2017 on whether Britain should leave the EU.
Restricting access to U.K. benefits for citizens of other EU countries is his most contentious demand, particularly in Poland, which has hundreds of thousands of people living in the U.K.
