Taiwan fortress-island faces tourist invasion
  • 8 years ago
Can Taiwan and China ever truly be friends? The question has returned to the fore after the two countries' presidents held historic talks earlier this month. Some on the smaller island nation say it's time to start getting along - and reap the trade benefits of a better relationship with China. But many Taiwanese remain unconvinced. One place where the uneasy friendship is most apparent is the Taiwanese island of Kinmen, also known as Jinmen.
Kinmen sits just two kilometres off the Chinese coast and is the proposed site of a free-trade zone between the two countries. But while tourism from the mainland may be flourishing there, the local government said this week that there's too much anti-China feeling for any closer ties. Our correspondents took the tourist ferry, negotiated the barbed wire on the beaches, and sent us this report.
