Bomb on downed Russian jet in Egypt was probably stashed under seat of 15-year-old girl

SINAI PENINSULA, EGYPT — Investigators say the bomb that brought down a Russian jet over Egypt, killing all 224 passengers on board, was placed under the seat of a 15-year-old girl.
According to the Russian Secret Service, the center of the bomb blast on the Metrojet flight that broke apart in October was in the tail section of the aircraft. When the bomb detonated, it blew a large hole at the back of the plane that sent the jet tumbling out of the sky at the rate of 6,000 feet per minute just 20 minutes after take off.
Investigators say the bomb was stashed where lifejackets are stored either under seat 31A, where 15-year-old Maria Ivleva sat, or under seat 30A, where 77-year-old Nadezhda Bashakova sat.
Experts say the force of the explosive was equal to one kilo of TNT, and the blast zone would have spanned across six rows of seats, killing people in that vicinity instantly.
Investigators do not believe there were any suicide bombers on the flight. They believe the explosive was placed on the aircraft by someone working at the airport.
Meanwhile, the United States State Department issued a worldwide travel alert for Americans on Monday and is urging citizens to exercise vigilance in public places and when using public transportation.
