Brazil: Community Tries to Save Aquatic Life after Mining Disaster
  • 8 years ago
Fishermen, experts and local volunteers have joined forces to save aquatic life after two mining dams recently burst, releasing a thick, potentially toxic mud into the Rio Doce. Scientists say that if the sludge hardens, it will result in lower oxygen levels in the water and diminish the fertility of river banks and farmland. The disaster blamed by many on the mine operator Samarco, resulted in the deaths of 11 people, with 12 still missing. teleSUR
