Woman gets walloped in the face for not speaking English in Applebee's

COON RAPIDS, MINNESOTA — A woman from Kenya was assaulted for not speaking English at an Applebee's restaurant in Coon Rapids, MInnesota on October 30, Pioneer Press reported.
According to Minnesota Public Radio News, the victim Asma Jama was sitting with her family waiting for their food and talking in Swahili, when Jodie Burchard-Risch, 43, overheard them, and decided it was a good idea to confront Jama about the language she was speaking. Jama is fluent in English and has been living in Minnesota for the past 15 years.
Burchard-Rish allegedly told Jama to "Go home….When you're in America you should speak English," before throwing her drink in Jama's face. Applebee's employees tried to calm the assailant, but instead she smashed her beer mug in Jama's face before trying to flee with her husband, Minnesota Public Radio News reported.
Prosecutors are considering hate crime charges in the case. Jaylani Hussein, Executive Director of The Council on American-Islamic Relations told WCCO-TV: "It's important that in this case it's not just an assault, it's someone who's being targeted for the base of, for their faith, what she look like and also how she was interacting with her family members."
