A permanent moon base will be one step closer if this joint EU-Russian mission succeeds

MOSCOW — The European Space Agency and its Russian counterpart are sending a lander to the moon's south pole as part of their plan to settle humans permanently on Earth's closest neighbor.

In one of a number of missions led by the Russian Federal Space Agency, it and the ESA hope to land the Luna 27 probe on the moon's South Pole Aitken Basin in 2020. The spacecraft's mission is to assess whether or not there is enough raw material on the moon's surface to support human life during future missions.

As parts of the south pole are shielded from the heat of the sun, the region is darker and colder than other sections of the moon. The environment has allowed water to collect and freeze at the surface of the moon and scientists say that this water could be used as a potential resource for the future.

The ESA already has ideas about what these future missions may be as the agency hopes to build lunar habitats in the lunar south pole as early as 2024. The agency plans to deploy inflatable domes on the moon's surface as shelter for astronauts. 3D-printing robots will be sent to the moon and will be used to build a layer of dirt around the domes.

The ESA says the lunar base they hope to build within the next decade could replace the International Space Station as the new base for astronauts to experience life in space. Scientists also hope that the moon base will help astronauts prepare for later missions to Mars.
