Well, I just looked it up and apparently he's blind in that eye anyway. His Wikipedia page says he lost the use of his right eye because a friend accidentally shot him in the eye, with a pellet gun, when he was twelve. I didn't know that.
I guess there really was no sense in worrying about it affecting his vision after all.
I could see Lafitte wearing the eye patch to the ring as a part of his gimmick, but wearing it in the match like he did could not have been good for his eye sight. Silent film actor Lon Chaney was left near-sighted after continually working with one eye covered up for his title role in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Had the pirate gimmick lasted longer than what it did, the same thing might have happened to Lafitte as well.
If I were in charge, I would really advise against wearing it while he wrestled.
