Japan is in the midst of a curious trend--toilet paper sales have surged despite a decline in population. 
According to the Japan News, about 4.5 billion rolls were sold in 2008 when the population was around 128 million, compared to last year when 5 billion rolls were sold with about a million fewer people. 
Some attribute the rising demand with the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake when there was a temporary shortage of toilet paper. 
Since then, the government has held campaigns urging citizens to stock up on the product in case of a natural disaster.
