Greek parliament opens with swearing in ceremony
  • 9 years ago
The new Greek parliament has been officially sworn in.

Different lawmakers have taken different oaths: Greek Orthodox, Muslim, and political.

The assembly was elected in a national poll in September, seven months into Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ first term.

His left-wing Syriza party won by an unexpected wide margin, but short of an overall majority.

Tsipras called the snap election after hardline left-wingers in Syriza rebelled against his policy u-turn that saw Greece signing a third international bailout, which comes with new austerity measures.

Tsipras is due to set out his policy priorities to the parliament on Monday.
