1952 US Steel Mill Industry Seizure By President Truman

On this episode of Longines Chronoscope, Senator H. Styles Bridges from New Hampshire discusses President Truman’s seizure of the steel industry. In an unprecedented move, President Truman called on his authority under the Constitution to take control of the steel mills. Bridges acknowledges that Truman felt justified in doing so, but no provision allows for such an action. Discussion centers on whether or not the seizure is the beginning of a dictatorship under Truman or if the loss of steal will threaten the national defense effort.
