Guatemala – Jimmy Morales Wins First Round of Presidential Elections
  • 9 years ago
In the highest voter turnout ever, millions of Guatemalans have voted for a new president just days after Otto Perez Molina resigned in a huge corruption scandal. The former comedian Jimmy Morales has a clear lead going into the runoffs, but it is unclear whether his opponent will be right-wing Manuel Baldizon or slightly left-leaning Sandra Torres. Morales is closely linked to a war criminal from the 1980s –– Edgar Justino Ovalle, a former general during the country’s genocidal civil war that included several massacres in the Quiche region. teleSUR
