Republican Party Presidential Candidate 1952 Election Show

In this episode of the Longines Chronoscope, Harold E. Stassen, president of the University of Pennsylvania and Republican presidential candidate, discusses his campaign, foreign policy initiatives, and relationship with Eisenhower and Joseph McCarthy. Stassen maintains that Taft is his principal opponent because of his clout within the Republican party. He repeatedly characterizes his plan for the US as having a very “active” foreign policy in order to protect US security. He does not advocate isolationism, but believes that Americans need to reduce spending abroad. He advocates turning other nations away from socialism, and “helping them to help themselves.” He is questioned on why he previously supported drafting Eisenhower for the ticket, and what the differences are between he and Eisenhower. They seem to be few since Stassen claims to agree with Eisenhower on a number of foreign policy issues such as the rearmament of Western Europe. He then discusses what primaries he in entered in and what support he has, which leads Hazlit to ask him if McCarthy will be supporting him in 1952 like he did in 1948. Stassen claims not to know what McCarthy’s plans are, except that he is up for reelection in his own state of Wisconsin.
