ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst announces the winner of the 2014 UNICEF Junior Ambassador Award in a recorded message from space. The message was presented by the German First Lady and Patroness of UNICEF Germany, Ms. Daniela Schadt, during the award ceremony at Paulskirche in Frankfurt, Germany. About 600 children participated in the event.

The annual UNICEF Junior Ambassador Award was launched for the first time in 2004. Junior Ambassadors are children and adolescents between six and 17 years of age. They are very much interested in child rights issues, are familiar with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and organize high-publicity events in their schools and communities to promote and publicize the rights of children all over the world.
