Brumaire - Gunhild Carling Big Band 2007
In this opening piece recorded at the Dresden Jazz Festival in the Ammonhof on May 11 2007 The Gunhild Carling Bigband plays a tune composed by Hans Carling which is called “Brumaire”. The French word Brumaire means the second month in the Franch Republican calender. It was named after the word Brume ( mist) which occurs frequently in October at that time of the year.
In 1927 Bix Beiderbecke recorded a tune called “In a Mist.” Somewhere the Carlings kept that in mind. Gunhild opens on trombone with the full trombone section and after an ensemble Gunhild switches and plays a cornet of which was said that it once belonged to Bix. Her cornet solo has this definite Bixian feel to it.
I own almost every recording that Bix did in his short live but I don’t think I heard many musicians come that close to his sound. Maybe Tom Pletcher. This is totally amazing!
