60-Foot Grass Bridge Being Built On National Mall

A team of indigenous Peruvian craftsmen are hand-constructing a 60-foot long bridge from grass ropes as part of this year’s Smithsonian’s Folklife Festival.

Peru is the main focus of this year’s Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C., and some of the indigenous representatives are showing off one of their signature achievements. 

Twelve of the more than 150 artisans who flew in for the event are hand-constructing a traditional grass rope bridge that will be 60-feet long. 

The final structure will be suspended on the National Mall, with its ends hung about 16-feet high. It’s built to be strong enough to accommodate about ten people. 

The ropes were specially braided from local mountain grass and flown in for this purpose.
