In Mali, the Tuareg-led rebel groups are supposed to sign a key peace deal on June 20th. The so-called Algiers agreement has already been signed by the central Bamako government and loyalist armed groups.
Mongi Hamdi is the UN envoy for Mali. A Tunisian diplomat, he is also the head of the UN mission in Mali, known as MINUSMA. He is "optimistic" the rebels will sign the deal this coming Saturday.
"The Coordination (Coordination of Azawad Movements, or the Tuareg-led rebel groups) is fully aware that they have no other option but to sign this agreement", he told FRANCE 24's Marc Perelman.
However, Mongi Hamdi warns that the implementation of the peace deal will be "very difficult".
