Black and Tan Medley - Ellington 1959
This is from a concert in Zurich Switzerland on October 9 1959.
The Duke would often start his concerts with a famous medley of classics he had composed in the twwenties. He recorded these tunes many times through the years and would often change personnel who would then be featured to play this medley for different musical effects, something the Duke was always keen to experience with.
We hear Black and Tan Fantasy, Creole Love Call, and the Mooche. Some of the featured musicians are Ray Nance, Russell Procope, Harry Carney, Quentin Jackson and Jimmy Hamilton.
“The Duke and his men at their best!”
