The crowd is actually chanting "Hogan" as the helicopter lands. Everyone is super-psyched. Then Lex Luger walks out and there's really no reaction at all... everyone is in a state of "wtf?" until they're coaxed into a "Lex! Lex! Lex!" chant a few minutes later. Boy, what a letdown. I remember being so disappointed watching this as a kid. If Hogan would have strut out of that helicopter, you would have heard a pop to end all pops. And jeez, how racist is Luger's speech?? Why is Yokuzuna a cancer to the WWF? Because he's Japanese? Wasn't this angle late by say, oh, 50 years? And that "slam?" Embarrassing.

Thank you for posting though. Brings back such terrible, terrible memories.

Yeah, SkyeReynolds, you're right. But what Vince failed to realize is that besides being ultra patriotic, guys like Hogan, and even Jim Duggan, had distinct personalities that fans took to. Luger had none. His personality was the red, white, and blue tassels tied around his forearms.

The whole "Lex Express" gimmick was a slam on Hogan. Vince McMahon wanted to show that he could take any muscular blond, give him a patriotic gimmick, and make a mega-star out of him.

Glad that worked out so well. >_>

Of course, but the fans seemed to think he was the one to save the day as that's what Hogan usually did.
