A window on the Latin American continent, as seen through the eyes of people, either well known or ordinary individuals, who give the viewer an insight into the essence of the region. Anti-establishment political films attracted the most attention at the 65th edition of the Berlinale Film Festival. Three Silver Bear Awards went to Latin American films, including Chilean director Pablo Larrain’s “The Club,” a devastating cricism of the Catholic Church. The second Silver Bear went to Jayro Bustamante’s debut film “Ixcanul,” the first Guatemalan film in the Mayan language to be presented at the Berlinale and one that denounces discrimantion faced by indigenous people in Guatemala. And Patricio Guzman’s “El Boton de Nacar” won the Silver Bear for the best script. The documentary chronicles impunity during the Pinochet dictatorship and the genocide of the indigenous peoples of Patagonia. teleSUR
