Two people were killed and six wounded late on Tuesday in attacks by militants in Egypt's lawless province of North Sinai, according to a Reuters report. A police base near the border town of Rafah was first attacked.

Militants shelled the base with mortar rounds and fired upon it with truck-mounted heavy machine guns. Another police checkpoint was also attacked in the town of El-Arish, 27 miles west of Rafah.

Near the remote village of Sadr El-Heytan, located in the centre of the province, Islamist militants attacked an Egyptian security forces checkpoint using rocket-propelled grenades.
