Buenos Aires train cameras catch staff sleeping, reading and using phones while on duty

Security cameras were installed in commuter train cabins in Argentina after conductors were found responsible for two deadly accidents in a year. Since then, they have recorded some drivers sleeping, reading and using their cellphone while on duty.
The videos were released after authorities launched an investigation into Buenos Aires' tragedy-prone rail system.
According to reports, the security cameras were installed in June with the aim to control conductors' behavior and limit train accidents.
Despite the use of cellphones being prohibited inside the cabins, CCTV footage showed a conductor using his phone while driving.
Another conductor was taped reading a book while traveling at high speed.
Cameras also caught a driver sleeping while the train was going through several crossroads. Yet another conductor attempted to cover the security camera with a shirt or a towel.
According to officials, conductors caught misbehaving on tape have been fired or disciplined for safety breaches.
Argentina's train unions demonstrated against the cameras with a daylong strike last month. They blamed bad brakes and other maintenance failures for both of the Buenos Aires train wrecks.
According to Reuters, Argentina's Interior and Transport Minister Florencio Randazzo said passengers have the right to have well-trained conductors driving responsibly.
"Randazzo told the media, drivers must now pass physicals to ensure they do not fall asleep at the wheel as well as sit a set of new exams that include an additional 100 hours of training," Reuters reported.
