Caught on camera: Oxygen tanks cause car explosion in Colorado Springs

The terrifying moment a car exploded in an ordinarily quiet Colorado Springs intersection was captured on amateur film.

A black Benz was carrying oxygen tanks in its trunk when the driver pulled up to stop at a red light. A Volkswagen Jetta driven by a less than aware driver smashed into the back of the Benz, causing a fire to ignite. The drivers rushed out of their vehicles - and just in time.

The heated oxygen containers exploded, the oxygen fueling the fire and causing an explosion that ripped the back of the black Benz clear of the vehicle. Onlookers can be heard in the footage screaming and running for cover. The Mercedes driver was taken to hospital with a spinal fracture caused in the rear-end collision. The Jetta driver left the scene in handcuffs, having been arrested for driving while under the influence of drugs.

Moral of the story - you never know what skeletons people are carting around in their car trunks!
