A UK company has developed a new spray-on coating that makes ordinary pathways glow in the dark to replace street lighting in the future.

The technology, called Starpath, was invented by the UK-based Pro-Teq and can be applied to almost any solid surface such as tarmac, concrete and wood. The application process is carried out in layers, where beginning with a polyurethane base and aggregate, a rocky, sandy mixture that forms the base of the new path-top and then followed by a layer of bioluminescent material and a polyaspartic top coat that seals the multiple layers together.

The Starpath absorbs UV light during the day and releases it at night. It can also adapt to natural lighting environment in terms of releasing its luminosity.

The product is currently being trialed on a highly trafficked footpath in Christ's Pieces, a well-known park in Cambridge, UK. It only took the company half an hour to cover the 150 square metre pathway with spray. The surface was reportedly ready for use less than four hours after the job began.
