Rangers at a National Park outside Bangkok, Thailand, have found the body of an American tourist believed to have been trampled to death by elephants.

According to police Colonel Woradet Suanklaai, the tourist, in her 20s, went missing on January 13 after leaving a campsite in Kaeng Krachan National Park in western Petchaburi province.

Her crumpled body was found deep in the woods five days after a 70-person search team began to look for her.

Suanklaai said the severity of the woman's injuries suggested that she was likely trampled to death by elephants.

"Her arms, her wrists and other parts of the body were broken, so we assumed she was trampled by elephants because no humans could have caused such powerful damage to the body," the police colonel said.

Suanklaai said the woman left a camping ground in the park alone to take pictures of wildlife.

"Looking at the pictures she took in her camera, we see a lot of animals, birds, snakes, lizards," Suanklaai said. "We assumed she wanted to take pictures of elephants because that's what the Kaeng Krachan National Park is famous for. We believed she wanted to find them and take some photos."

The body was taken to a forensic institute in Bangkok to determine the exact cause of death.

The U.S. embassy in Bangkok confirmed the death but would give no further details.
Kaeng Krachan is 200 km southwest of Bangkok and is the largest national park in Thailand, covering nearly 3000 square kilometers.
