An autistic man playing on a calculator was mistaken as a murderer by incompetent Taipei city straphangers who called police after freaking out.

The man, surnamed Chang, who has autism, was quietly using his calculator on the metro towards Banciao yesterday afternoon when he accidentally touched a male passenger sitting next time to him. After noticing the unusual facial expressions that Chang had, the passenger grabbed a fire extinguisher and tried to defend himself. Other people freaked out worried it might be another subway stabbing.

All of a sudden, people started running, some were injured from falling over as they tried to escape.

When the cars arrived at the station, police came in and found Chang sitting alone, posing no threat but wearing a smile.

The mother later arrived at the police station and said her son was autistic.

The mother said: "Children with autism often have problems communicating. My son has strange behaviors, in this case, playing on the calculator. He had no idea what was going on. I understand the public is anxious [after the Taipei subway stabbing incident], I don't blame them."

After finding that it was a false alarm, police let Chang go home.
