Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crash: DNA forensics tests identify 298 victims

Malaysian and Dutch teams are working together to identify and tag bodies recovered from the Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 that crashed last Thursday in Ukraine.

While bodies from the crash have been transported to Amsterdam, the Malaysian Health Ministry in Putrajaya has begun collecting swabs and blood samples from family members of 29 passengers on board the MH17 flight that will be used to identify bodies of the victims.

Officials recovered 282 intact bodies and 87 other fragments that can be readily identified using a combination of primary and secondary identification methods. According to the Disaster Victim Identification guide, primary identification methods include fingerprinting, forensic dental analysis and DNA analysis if the skin is no longer intact or printable.

Genetic material needed for DNA analysis can be extracted from blood or buccal cells swabbed from a person's cheek. This test identifies the victim by matching his or her DNA to a blood-related relative's DNA.

Secondary identification methods rely on personal identification items such as surgery scars, tattoos and jewelry.

Using such methods, the bodies should be identified within a few days, Noor Hisham Abdullah, Malaysia's Health Ministry director-general, said in a Star report.
