UCLA flood: 5 people rescued as broken water main spews 10m gallons of water onto Sunset Blvd

An underground water main ruptured near UCLA on Tuesday afternoon, prompting street closures and a campus shut-down as firefighters rescued stranded drivers from their cars.

The 92- year-old water main running under the 10600 block of Sunset Boulevard directly north of the UCLA campus burst at around 3:30 p.m. Water shooting from the 30-inch pipe reached as high as 30 feet and opened a 10-feet hole on the road.

A section of Sunset was shut off as water from the pipe, which transports nearly 75,000 gallons water per minute, flooded onto the campus. The water reached underground parking lots, and down the stairs into the school’s Pauley Pavilion.

To control the flood, authorities needed to slowly shut down large-diameter valves as to not trigger other ruptures down the line.

Due to rush hour traffic, responders did not arrive on scene until approximately 5 p.m. The water main was not shut off until 7 p.m., about three-and-a-half hours after it ruptured.

This incident takes place as the state faces extreme drought. Officials said up to 10 million gallons of water had been lost by the time the water was stopped. The city uses around 55 million gallons of water per day.

School officials said that the flooding also affected the university’s athletic track and nearby administrative buildings. The cause of the water main break is still being investigated.
