Indiana Pacers All-Star Paul George suffered a Kevin Ware-like right leg fracture in the US national team’s intrasquad scrimmage last Friday in Las Vegas.

George ran after James Harden down the lane with 9:33 left in the fourth quarter to contest a layup, when his right leg smashed against the backboard stanchion and crumbled. Trainers ran out onto the floor and after 10 minutes of stoppage, George was taken out of the arena on a stretcher. All the players were visibly upset. Coach Mike Krzyzewski then told the crowd that the scrimmage was over out of respect for George and his family.

George suffered an open tibia-fibula fracture. He underwent successful surgery and is now resting at Sunrise Hospital. Doctors David Silverberg, Joseph Yu and USA Basketball team physician Riley Williams were present for the surgery, a USA Basketball team release said.

George later took to Twitter and said, “Thanks everybody for the love and support.”

“I’ll be ok and be back better than ever!!! Love y’all!!”
