When animals attack: Vicious otter owns grandma and grandson in Washington river

A Grandmother and her grandson had to get multiple stitches after a rare otter attack in Washington State on July 31.

Lelani Grove was with her 8-year-old grandson, Bryce Moser, at Pilchuck River. The boy was in the water at the swimming hole the family had been visiting for years, while his grandmother and mother stood watching from the water bank.

Wildlife officials believe that Bryce got too close to the mother otter’s pups. When attacks happen, they are most likely to be a female in July and August when mothers are out with their pups.

The grown otter swam toward little Bryce and began viciously attacking him, biting his head, clawing at him, while he bobbed up and down in the water.

Bryce’s grandmother and mother saw the attack - heard his screams- and the grandmother ran into the water.

She held onto the otter as tight as she could and screamed for someone to get Bryce out of the water as the animal began clawing and biting at her face and hands.

At the hospital, Lelani received hundreds of stitches to her head and face and may suffer from longterm minor injury to her right away, and Bryce was given nine staples in his head. Officials are trying to trap and relocate the other. This is the second report of a violent otter attack in the area this summer.
