A 34-year-old Chicago woman died Thursday afternoon after part of a gargoyle statue fell and hit her on the head outside of a historic city church in the South Loop neighborhood.

The head of the gargoyle statue struck the woman in the head after falling from the Second Presbyterian Church of Chicago at 19th and Michigan, just after noon.

Sarah Bean of Chicago, mother of two, was headed for a lunchtime date with her fiancé Lance Johnson when a piece of facade dropped directly onto her head, opening a large wound and sending Johnson into hysterics.

“I saw that crack on her head and thought, ‘She’s definitely dead,’” witness Broderick Adams said as he traced his finger from his forehead to the back of his head.

The couple was standing at Cullerton St. and Michigan Ave. in the South Loop section of the city when a corner of one of the metal decorative pieces on the building gave way, striking a gargoyle statue on the southeast corner of the steeple and causing the head to fall.

The church is more than 100 years old. The church failed inspections between 2007 and 2011, but an inspection October 2013 found no violations.

Bean was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The longtime couple had two sons and lived just blocks away from the church. Bean was supposed to work Thursday evening at Lurie’s Children’s Hospital, where she worked in the pediatric intensive care unit.
