Obama immigration reform 2014 to protect almost 5 million illegal immigrants
  • 9 years ago
U.S. President Barack Obama announced immigration reform policy today that will
give almost five million illegal immigrants the chance to apply for work permits and temporary relief from the threat of deportation.

Under the president’s reform policy, those who have been in the U.S. for at least five years and are parents of citizens or legal permanent residents would be eligible to apply for the protections.

Nearly a million more could benefit through other new or expanded programs, according to the White House.

However, the president also said criminals are still subject to deportation.

The plan could affect businesses in unexpected ways, with experts saying this could enable workers to seek new jobs and higher wages to the benefit of some business sectors more than others.
