Airplane crash: Asiana Airlines flight skids off runway in Hiroshima, injuring 20 passengers
  • 9 years ago
Investigators were on site after an Asiana Airlines aircraft skidded off the runway Tuesday night at the Hiroshima airport.

Initial reports from the Hiroshima airport indicated the tail of the plane may have clipped the runway just before landing, according to the Associated Press.

The Airbus 320 was carrying 74 passengers when the plane landed just after 8 p.m. Differing reports put the number of crew members at seven or eight.

Photos of the scene posted to Twitter showed the nose of the plane facing the direction from which it came, indicating the plane spun around before coming to stop.

Witnesses also described seeing sparks under the plane as it skidded along the runway, Japan’s national broadcasting channel NHK reported.

The passengers and crew member exited the plane via emergency slides. Emergency fire vehicles were on site, and 20 passengers were taken to the hospital for assessment of minor injuries, according to transport officials.

A transport ministry official later reported the airplane may have clipped an antenna as it approached the runway.

The runway remained closed several hours after the incident.

Asiana Airlines is one of South Korea’s two major airlines.
