Colombia vs FARC: President Juan Manuel Santos restarts airstrikes after ambush kills 10

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos has lifted the ban on airstrikes against the rebel group FARC after the militants launched an ambush in southwestern Colombia on Wednesday that killed 10 troops.

Armed with grenades, guns and explosive devices, FARC militants attacked a group of Colombian soldiers at a covered sports pitch in Cauca province during the early hours of Wednesday. Ten soldiers were slain in the ambush.

This latest development threatens to derail the peace talks between the Colombian government and the FARC, which have been taking place in Havana, Cuba since 2012. But President Santos has not terminated the negotiations at this point.

The peace talks had made some progress before the surprise attack. In February, the FARC pledged not to recruit any rebels under the age of 17, and in March the two sides agreed to cooperate in the removal of landmines.

Pastor Alape, a FARC member, said during a press conference the government should bear responsibility as it has ordered attacks against the FARC even after they declared the unilateral truce.

Formed in 1964, the FARC aims to establish a communist regime in Colombia. The internal strife in Colombia has become the longest ongoing conflict in Latin America, and has killed more than 220,000 people and led to the displacement of millions.
