Mexico drug wars: Authorities capture leader of Juarez Cartel, Jesus Aguayo

Mexican security forces arrested the leader of the notorious Juárez Cartel during an operation conducted early Friday morning.

Jesus Aguayo, the leader of Mexico’s Juárez Cartel, was captured in the municipality of Villa Ahumada, located 130 kilometres from Ciudad Juárez. All-terrain vehicles, six helicopters as well as 450 military personnel and police officers were involved in Friday’s operation. Security forces killed one of Aguayo’s bodyguards and arrested another while capturing Aguayo at a ranch in Villa Ahumada.

Mexico and the U.S. have sought Aguayo’s arrest for drug trafficking, murder, kidnapping and gasoline theft. He is responsible for providing the explosives for a car bomb in 2010 that killed four people, and is also linked to a bar attack in 2012 that killed 15 people. The U.S. also accuses Aguayo of involvement in the 2009 killing of José Daniel González, a protected witness.

Aguayo has led Juárez Cartel since the organization’s long-time chief, Vicente ‘El Viceroy’ Carillo Fuentes was apprehended late last year.
