Brazil soccer shooting: Eight Corinthians fans slain as they prepare banners for Palmeira clash
  • 9 years ago
Eight supporters of Brazilian soccer team Corinthians were shot dead over the weekend as they prepared for an upcoming game against rival team Palmeira.

Members of the Pavilhao 9 fan club for Brazilian soccer team Corinthians were preparing for an upcoming game on Saturday night at their Sao Paulo fan club site when three masked gunmen stormed the clubhouse. The gunmen forced the approximately 80 members inside to get on the ground. The gunmen then reportedly shot seven of them in the head.

An eighth man was shot as he tried to flee. He was able to reach a nearby gas station and was taken to the hospital. He later died of his injuries.

There have been several cases of violence among Corinthian fan club members and Palmeira supporters, however, the police believe the weekend’s shooting had nothing to do with the upcoming game. Instead, Brazilian authorities believe the shooting is linked to a turf dispute among drug dealers as two of the victims have previous convictions for drug trafficking.
