Chanel Jewelry robbery: $5.4m worth of jewelry stolen when Paris thieves snatch handbag

A handbag allegedly containing US$5.4 million worth of jewelry was stolen from a Taiwanese art collector during a smash-and-grab robbery in a Paris traffic tunnel Wednesday afternoon.

The art collector was robbed as she sat in a taxi in Paris’s 1.3 kilometre-long Landy Tunnel. Three thieves reportedly smashed through the taxi’s rear window as the vehicle sat in traffic.

The thieves grabbed the art collector’s bag containing US $5.4 million worth of Chanel jewelry. A total of thirteen pieces of jewelry were stolen, including a ring worth close to US $1.5 million. The items included watches, rings and bracelets. The three men then ran away on foot and climbed an embankment outside the tunnel.

Investigators working on the case are unclear whether the thieves planned the attack to specifically target the art collector, or if they had simply ‘gotten lucky.’

Paris’s Landy Tunnel is known for similar smash-and-grab robberies in the past.
