A fire broke out on a Spanish ferry travelling from Mallorca on Tuesday afternoon, forcing some 150 people to abandon ship.

The ferry "The Sorrento" was carrying 156 people from Palma de Mallorca to Valencia when it caught fire, Reuters reported.

The fire reportedly broke out on one of the ferry's car decks, the BBC reported. The ferry sent out a distress signal at 13:50 local time.

The captain did not want to evacuate the ferry initially, but eventually all passengers and crew members abandoned the ship and were rescued by another passing ferry, Reuters reported.

The operator of the ferry, Trasmediterranea-Acciona said the cause of the fire remains unclear.
